Shine Medical Technologies of Madison is moving ahead with an effort to make a vital medical isotope at a new plant in Janesville. The isotope, molybdenum-99, is needed for about 20 million procedures annually in the United States alone. “Moly-99” quickly decays into a form, technetium-99, that is useful for medical scans used to detect cancer and assess blood supply to the heart. The UW–Madison spinoff’s Janesville plant is slated to employ about 150.

In a creative twist, the Madworks Accelerator challenged startups to compete in a "pitch night" where the case had to center around making the largest economic impact on the state of Wisconsin. Two of the top three prizes are linked to UW.

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), a foundation dedicated to promoting, encouraging, and aiding scientific investigation and research at UW-Madison was ranked 7th among universities for U.S. patents. These rankings show the great success of a research university and intellectual foundation collaborating together.

The University of UW–Madison has once again placed high in two recent rankings.  Produced by Money Magazine, UW–Madison made the top 10 list of colleges that produce the most Fortune 500 CEOs and was ranked 25th in the world by the Center for World University Rankings.
