The Challenge: GE HealthCare, a global leader in medical technology, sought to expand its research and development capabilities to drive innovation in patient care. To achieve this, the company aimed to deepen its long-standing relationship with UW–Madison to explore new frontiers in medical imaging, digital health, and disease-focused solutions.
The Solution: Building on more than 40 years of collaboration, GE HealthCare and the UW–Madison School of Medicine and Public Health launched a 10-year strategic research partnership. This initiative combines the expertise of UW–Madison’s physicians, scientists and researchers with GE HealthCare’s cutting-edge medical technology to tackle emerging challenges in health care.
The partnership extends beyond medical imaging to encompass advancements in artificial intelligence, theranostics, and molecular imaging. It also supports the development of patient care solutions aimed at enhancing clinical workflows and providing more precise, personalized care.

Impact and Results: The partnership between UW–Madison and GE HealthCare has yielded transformative results for both organizations and the patients they serve. Over the past decade, more than 130 collaborative research studies have advanced medical imaging technologies and other innovations that improve patient care.
For example, a groundbreaking study using quantitative MRI to map iron concentrations in the liver demonstrated the potential for early detection and management of liver disease. Another collaboration optimized CT imaging quality with GE HealthCare’s TrueFidelity deep learning reconstruction technology, reducing radiation exposure for patients without compromising diagnostic accuracy.
GE HealthCare and UW–Madison have also collaborated to create standardized CT protocols for GE HealthCare systems that have been distributed to more than 4,000 sites globally. These and other milestones underscore the partnership’s commitment to translating research into real-world solutions, benefiting patients across Wisconsin and beyond.
